About us

Role of the South East Forestry Hub

Like community and business, the South East Forestry Hub is focused on growing a better future – a future filled with promise and potential.

Our role is to represent local forestry industries in South East NSW so that we can foster a growing and positive pathway for sustainable forestry, now and into the future.

Our vision is to see more trees in the ground and more forest products made here at home.

Our priorities

We support forestry in South East NSW in order to create positive growth in our region. We work with industry, state and local governments, and other key stakeholders to prepare and provide the Government with strategic planning, technical assessments and analyses that aim to support growth in the forest industries in our region. Our priorities include:

  1. Consultation and Awareness Raising to facilitate connections with a wide range of stakeholders and interested parties across the Hub region, build the profile of forestry, grow the ownership of Hub activities and improve engagement in forestry initiatives.
  2. Capacity Building Activities. Broker and increase the knowledge, capacity and skill of stakeholders in the Hub region across the forestry profile and evaluate successful delivery modes to achieve this.
  3. Future Investment. Investigate resource and production development opportunities for future forest (plantation and natural) and industry expansion. This could include supply chain, policy, mapping potential land availability, or engaging with local government, farmers, indigenous communities and other landowners to promote forestry plantings.
  4. Industry Innovation. Identify and assess new industry opportunities for innovative investment streams including markets, infrastructure, processing, technology and other diversification options to assist in the future planning of forestry in the Hub region.
  5. Active and Adaptive Forest Management. Determine and highlight sustainable and best practise forest management across plantations and native forests.

About Regional Forestry Hubs

South East Forestry Hub is one of 11 Regional Forestry Hubs across Australia, which were established under the National Forestry Industry Plan 2018.

The Australian Government’s A Better Plan for Forestry and Forest Products 2022-23 Budget measure has committed to an additional $8.6 million over three years from 2024-25 to extend and expand the role of the 11 Hubs.

The Regional Forestry Hub regions were chosen to represent existing concentrations of wood supply resources, combined with significant existing processing and/or manufacturing operations, established domestic and/or international transport links, and strong potential for growth.
